what's in a name?

my husband is writing a song. transforming his birthday psalm, psalm 20, into a song with a group of song writers at our church. we talked about this over coffee this last week and his insight on something has stuck with me for several days now.

psalm 20:7 says "some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the NAME of the Lord our God..."

as ian explained his new love and understanding of this psalm, he shared how a certain verse resonated with him. the one about the NAME of the Lord. about trusting in a name.

we talked about how culture these days talks about faith. and how people "feel" about God, about our experiences with Him or about Him....but do we react or revere His name. just the name, like long ago?

"think about it, lyss. it's like branding...think about coca-cola. we trust that product's name. it's brand. we see the name or hear the name and we simply trust it, what's behind it and what it means to us. no matter if it's on sale or hard to find, the experiences with that product and the feel-good notion we have makes us loyal to those products. we trust them and are endeared to them. they have built a reputation and we simply believe and trust in it's name. you've heard that name over and over for decades, and you know the name, you don't even have to think twice about it, it's just solid...."

are we that way with the Name of the Lord? the Lord should be the same way. there is power in the name of God. simply the name of God commanded and evoked fear and respect and awe and wonder thousands of years ago.

it made me think about truly praying in the power of the NAME of the Lord. and how one word befalls the enemy, one word. one NAME. and that's JESUS.

our emotions drag us back and forth, pendulum like, and we are forced to grasp for His truth, His promises, recall and recount what HE has done for us and in us and through us.....but what i realized is how much more i need to call upon HIS name as well. because there is power in His name. there is a solid brand in the name of the Lord. i trust it. even when the waves are raging all around my boat and all seems unsteady....i trust in the name, in WHO the name represents....in all He has done, in His goodness, in His justice and might, in His gentleness and faithfulness. if you don't find yourself feeling full and moved by simply the name, perhaps it shows a bigger picture of loyalty and devotion to it, one that's missing or under nurtured... branding and symbolism, they are all wrapped up and deeply rooted in one simple name......it's a name that we can go back to, over and over and simply just loyally rest upon. because of what He has done? yes...BUT mostly and mainly because of WHO He is, alone....there is power in that alone, never mind the "us" part of it...His name alone is GREAT! and Worthy. and one to be called upon, praised, feared, revered, glorified, leant upon, cried out to, preached and trusted....AND one that we are to be loyal to.

one of my favorite hymns.....

Jesus, the NAME high over all,
In hell, or earth, or sky:
Angels and men before it fall,
And devils fear and fly.

Jesus, the NAME to sinners dear,
The NAME to sinners giv'n;
It scatters all their guilty fear,
It brings them peace of heav'n.

Jesus the prisoner's fetters breaks,
And bruises Satan's head;
Pow'r into strengthless souls He speaks,
And life into the dead.

Oh, that the world might taste and see,
The riches of His grace!
The arms of love that compass me,
Would all mankind embrace.

Him as my righteousness I show,
His saving truth proclaim:
'Tis all my business here below,
To cry, Behold the Lamb!

Happy, if with my latest breath
I may but gasp His NAME:
Preach Him to all, and cry in death,
"Behold, behold the Lamb!"

He is the "I AM!" How awesome is *that* branding! :) Because he is the Great I AM, and the beginning and the end...we can rest confidently that he is indeed who he says he is!
