better way

this song makes me smile.

sometimes, somedays...ben harper just helps.

"better way, one of my favorites of his always makes me smile. and cry..and

my brother sent it to me shortly after syndey died. it spoke volumes to me. even with a hurting broken heart in pieces all over the floor, i knew there was a better way, even the words in the song screamed it to me when i couldn't hear much of anything.. i knew there was hope....

the gut wrenching part of the song where he starts yelling, it's almost primal and brings me to tears. probably because i can relate. to that primal screaming of the heart.....everyday we are just fighting for life. but mostly for the life of our heart really more than anything else...fighting for joy, for peace..for reconciliation with a loved one, for a purer heart in our actions, for a more gentle spirit in parenting, a more loving serving heart in marriage....an un-judging attitude for our neighbor or an un-selfish spirit in general, in all we do.....

the drums at the end are amazing too. they beat loudly and crazily, much like the heart beat.

this sweet song and it's primal lyrics remind me that we can make choices, we can CHOOSE a better way. we don't have to remain cynics and bitter boned creatures walking this earth, no matter what happens to us or what comes our way. we can believe in something bigger and greater than ourselves and CHOOSE to live in light of that, as a response...oh what hope that brings my tired heart. oh what grace that screams to the lawyer part of my heart.......oh how that makes me want to jump on chairs and scream it for all to hear...what good news!!! right?

i'm a living sunset
lightning in my bones
push me to the edge
but my will is stone
fools will be fools
and wise will be wise
but i will look this world
straight in the eyes
what good is a man
who won't take a stand
what good is a cynic
with no better plan
(hope these words feel pleasant
as they rest upon your ears)
reality is sharp
it cuts at me like a knife
everyone i know
is in the fight of their life
take your face out of your hands
and clear your eyes
you have a right to your dreams
and don't be denied
i believe in a better way

Wow, Lyss. These are intense lyrics, but ones that make me think. And thinking rightly about one's pain and plight is a good thing. Thank you.
