patty griffin's song, rain, comes to mind with this image.."strange how hard it rains now, rows and rows of big dark clouds....."..ian and liam and i watched the rain falling from clouds like this one this evening. from far away, the lines streamed from the sky to the earth. "look at the line rain, momma!" liam exclaimed. i told them how pretty it looked from so far away. it was nice to look at it and not be in the thick of it. to see it from afar and appreciate the beauty of the storm, but glad we weren't smack dab in the middle of the eye of it.then, i realized as i was talking to ian about this, that really, that is how life is. the storm is the worst when it is overhead, but from afar it looks much different. whether it is your own hindsight after the storm has passed and moved on, whether you see someone's life from afar and see it one way while up close they are drowning in the rain falling down on them, or even if that is how God sees the storms in our lives from afar like that...knowing that the rain will bring the dry earth much needed water and growth and wash away the grime that has built up since the last storm...knowing what beautiful rainbow will follow the storm after all the rain...what our lives must look like to others and to our Creator is one view, but when you are in the eye of the storm, standing under a magnificent rain cloud that is pounding buckets of water on you, you can't see straight, you can't see what is right in front of you through all the chaos and the wind, you can't see the beautiful streaks of light and patterns and strokes of color it will leave on the world or is leaving on the world in the middle of it....
i don't know...not a huge theological lesson i am trying to make, just one of perspective...and one of letting God show me through His creation and my quietness, what it is like to just be still and listen and let Him speak to me...even in the storms..

What an excellent observer you are, sweet Alyssa. You see beyond the superficial.

I love your analogies and train-of-thought posts. I love that I can so see you realizing and writing them, and I love understanding and relating to what you write. It makes me feel a little closer to you on days I am feeling so very far apart.
I would love to hear these (or any)thoughts in person if you feel like picking up the phone and calling.
No pressure.
No stress.
Just waiting on you to make the call.
Love you Lyss!!!
Incredible. Awesome. You're so right.
this is my favorite Patty song. No competition.
Great post Alyssa! Thanks so much for sharing that. So very true!

i love it that you truly are a master of the obvious AND the not so obvious, because i am neither. and that way i get to learn bit by bit. thanks for your sweet words dear friend.
lyss,
you never cease to amaze me with your observations and analogies, being able to put into clear words the thoughts and feelings that crowd our heads.
on a different note, Patti Griffin is one of my favorites, and not just because she's written hits for big time artists (such as Emmylou Harris), but because her words and her voice convey such depth of feeling. I've often thought that the lesser known singer-songwriters are the real stars with talent. I'm always interested in knowing women of depth and intellect--women like you.
blessings,
your f-i-l
yeh, i can thank my sweet jolie for turning me onto patty and her music....one of the best birthday presents i have ever received...thanks jolie ruth!
